Flora & Fauna

Wildflowers You will find an overwhelming variety of wildflower species to dazzle your eye and your senses! Please visit our Wildflower Gallery for a sampling of the Westfir area’s finer specimens.

Old Growth Forest To read more about visiting old growth in the Westfir & Oakridge area, please visit the Middle Fork Ranger District’s page on Old Growth.

Birdwatching The area surrounding Westfir and the greater Oakridge area provides numerous opportunities for birdwatching. Immediate to the Westfir area, you will find such treasures as Bald Eagles, Merlin & Peregrine Falcons (although rare) and Osprey, to name a few. Mountain Quail can be readily seen in the old mill site, and if you keep a sharp eye out, you might get lucky and spot a rare Green Heron.

Autumn brings us many waterfowl that enjoy the North Fork River, including Buffleheads and Goldeneyes. Varied Thrush bring in the Spring, and Pileated Woodpeckers can be viewed all the season long. Summertime brings the showy Osprey, often seen diving for fish in the North Fork.

Special thanks to Wanda Wilson & Cheron Ferland for the above information.

Wildlife Viewing The surrounding forest supports a diverse population of wildlife. Blacktail Deer and Roosevelt Elk abound, and where there’s deer and elk, there’s predators. Cougars (mountain lions) and packs of coyotes can often be heard at night. Black bears are glimpsed on a fairly frequent basis, and smaller bobcats are present, but rarely seen. Kit foxes, mink, marten, land otters, beavers, skunks and even porcupines make up some of the smaller species you may see while visiting Westfir and the surrounding areas.

For hunting regulations, please visit the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife website.
